Ça va? The two-word conversation, explained
How the French ask, answer and politely dodge “how are you?”, all with the same two words.
If you only learn one French phrase before your next trip, make it ça va. It is a question, an answer, a greeting and a polite way to change the subject, all in two syllables. Literally, it means “it goes”. In practice, it means almost everything.
Ça va? As a question
Say it with a rising tone, and ça va ? means “How are you?” or “How’s it going?”. It is the most common way to greet a friend, a colleague or a neighbour you already know.
- Ça va ? — How’s it going? (everyday, works everywhere)
- Comment ça va ? — How are you? (a little more complete)
- Tu vas bien ? / Vous allez bien ? — Are you well? (a bit more personal)
Ça va. As an answer
Say it with a falling tone, and ça va means “I’m fine”. The French don’t automatically answer “great!”: a calm, flat ça va is perfectly positive. Here are the shades you will hear.
| French | What it really means |
|---|---|
| Ça va très bien ! | Really good |
| Ça va bien, merci. | Good, thanks |
| Ça va. | Fine (neutral, normal) |
| Ça va, ça va… | Fine-ish. Please don’t ask. |
| Bof, ça va. | Meh |
| Pas trop, non. | Not great, actually |
Ça va? Ça va. The full conversation
— Salut, ça va ?
— Ça va, et toi ?
— Ça va.
That’s it. Three lines, zero information exchanged, and a perfectly successful social moment. It works exactly like “How are you? — Good, you? — Good.” Nobody expects a medical report.
Five other ways to use it
- Ça va ? after someone trips: Are you OK?
- Ça va, ça va ! with an annoyed tone: Alright, alright!
- Ça va ? while showing your outfit: Does this look OK?
- Ça te va ? Does that work for you? (“On se voit à 8 h, ça te va ?”)
- Ça te va bien. That suits you. (about clothes or a haircut)
Why it is so handy
There is no “you” in ça va, so you never have to choose between tu and vous. When you’re not sure how formal to be, it’s your safest friend.
Your turn: next time a French friend greets you, don’t panic and don’t translate “How are you doing today?”. Just smile and say « Ça va, et toi ? ». You’ve just had your first real French conversation.
